Revelation
Audio Labs "reverse" I2S cable
Empirical offers a custom
version of Revelation Audio Labs I2S cable. This
cable can
be used between Off-Ramp I2S or Pace-Car and a
Northstar DAC. Improves on detail and
liveness over our own twisted-pair cable and it's
actually longer for more convenience.
Top
Fuel Power Cable
Empirical offers a new
reference power cable, the Top Fuel. This is the
one we bundle
with our Spoiler DAC. Superb, uncolored power
cable. Highly recommended for DAC's
as well as amps and preamps.

Pace-Car
reclocker for Squeezebox, Sonos, Northstar
Transport,
AirPort
Express, Olive and All Empirical USB converters
The Pace-Car Type 1 and 2
are available. Type 1 can be used with
Squeezebox,
Sonos, Olive, Northstar Transport and other
Transports and PCI cards
that have Master, Bit or Word Clock inputs. This
transforms a Squeezebox into a
world-class contender.
Type
2 can be used with USB converters including the
Freeway I2S, Freeway 2,
Off-Ramp I2S, Off-Ramp Turbo 2 and AirPort
Express. It can even be used straight
from a S/PDIF from a laptop. The Type 2 versions
must be tuned to the particular
laptop and may not work with other laptops.
All
things that go through the Pace-Car end-up the
same high-quality at the outputs.
Rev
3 of the board can support inputs including:
I2S
or Toslink and S/PDIF or AES
Outputs
are:
I2S
and S/PDIF or AES
Freeway
2 and Freeway I2S getting new clocks
A new oscillator with
extremely low jitter will be going in all new
Freeways.
This oscillator adds $10 to the price of a new
Freeway and the benefits are
worth at least $200. Really outstanding. Existing
Freeway 2 and Freeway I2S
can be upgraded for $125 including shipping.
Older Freeways based on the
Transit are not compatible. The Off-Ramp is still
a bit sweeter sound with the
Superclock4, but the Freeways are getting closer.
"Driverless"
Firmware now available for Off-Ramps/Spoiler
We have finally licensed
our own version of the "driverless"
firmware made
famous by Benchmark Media Systems. This requires
no driver on either PC or
MAC and is Vista compatible. It supports 24/44.1
through 24/96 transparently.
All new Off-Ramps and Spoilers will have the new
firmware installed. It does not
support AC3, so if you want to use it with
movies, then we can still provide the
M-Audio driver and firmware. Upgrades to existing
Off-Ramp I2s, Off-Ramp
Turbo 2, Freeway2 and Freeway I2S can be made for
$125 including shipping.
Older Off-Ramps and Freeways based on the Transit
board are not compatible.
Please schedule the upgrade by email. We will try
to knock-out 1-2 per week
between mods and in our "spare-time",
which is non-existant ;>)
For
those that do not upgrade, please try out this
new method for playback:

Update Turbomod
for the Benchmark DAC-1
This one is a must-have.
It eliminates much of the vocal harshness of the
DAC-1
as well as improving the depth of image. 6-moons
review did not have this mod.
Vocal smoothness is similar to the Northstar DAC
after this mod.
Northstar 192 DAC
and transport mods added
The Northstar 192 DAC is
based on the Crystal D/A chip. This
implementation
uses the best currently available 24/192
upsampler chip and has discrete
transistor output. The real interesting thing
about the Northstar is the native
I2S interface. It is compatible with the Off-Ramp
I2S and an I2S-output Northstar
Transport. It allows one to get into I2S
interfaces using either Transport or
Computer. The mods for the DAC-1 are also simpler
and less expensive, making
it the most cost-effective world-lcass solution.
USB extensions
We recommend active UBS
hubs or the Opticis at this time:
http://usb-shop.com/opticis.html
The
Belkin Wireless USB Hub is available now as well
as the WiRanger.
Both of these add significant jitter, so we
recommend a Type 2 Pace-Car
if you plan to use either one.
The
coolest interface is to use Mac and control
iTunes to drive USB using your
iPhone or an iPod Touch. See our forum on
Audiocircle.com for more info.
